Known as stick boxes, these old Indian boxes were passed down through the family. This chest dates to the 19th century. This style of box is found exclusively in the Jaisalmer area of the Thar desert in Western Rajasthan. Wood is very scarce in the desert and the resourceful tribes people of this area made these boxes from sticks harvested from the Kair tree - Capparis decidua. The sticks are then riveted together with hand wrought iron fittings to make a very sturdy box.
These chests were used as dowry chests and would have been handed down from one generation to the next.
